Assignment As An Excuse For Bad Teachers

Nowadays, we can see many students complain about their subject loads at school, no matter what kind of school they go to. They always say that they are confused to think about their lessons, examinations, and especially assignments. It’s not only one or two subjects that they have to learn, but they have more than ten subjects and it means that it is not easy. But, it seems like the teachers never know it. There are just a few teachers who know how hard it is to be a student and the rest don’t care about it, and just ignore it. The teachers often give more than two examinations on the same day while their students do not understand the lesson well, but the worst of all is that they often give a lot of assignments while the students already have many other assignments from other teachers. But, the teachers always think that they have such smart and responsible students that they don’t have to worry about. They have never stopped giving those assignments although they know that the students often complain about it. They just think that it’s even worse if they don’t give those assignments to their students, because people will think badly if the teachers aren’t able to make their students understand about the lesson and they just do nothing. The teachers are supposed to care about their students and explain the lesson again so that it will be understood by the students, but they just give the students assignment which is futile for them. So, assignment is the best excuse for teachers to avoid their responsibilities.

Firstly, the teachers can do other things that they want while their students do their assignment. Just like their students, the teachers often feel lazy to do things that they are supposed to do, so it’s not rare for us to catch them skipping the class whenever they want to. They never consider it as an irresponsible action because they thought that it’s OK as long as they leave their students with assignment. This paradigm causes them to think that they can also come late to the class. Especially in Indonesia, coming late is not something rare. Besides that, of course it takes time for the students to do their assignment. On the other hand the teachers have nothing to do so that they will feel bored. Because of their boredom, they will feel sleepy then fall asleep in the class. There’s also another possibility that can happen, they’ll look for someone to talk to because they need someone else in order to drive away their boredom. Consequently they will go to the teacher’s room for a chat. The worst of all is when they are faced with financial problem. This kind of situation will make them do other business out there to earn more money because they already have a wrong paradigm of using assignment as an excuse to avoid their responsibilities.

Secondly, the teachers aren’t worried if some of their students do not understand about the lesson that was taught. Of course it’s not an acceptable thing because they have a responsibility to explain the lesson well to their students. But they just neglect their students and let them do everything on their own. They are pretty sure by giving them assignment the students will learn the lesson themselves because the teachers assume that their students are smart and responsible so that they will do the assignment. Besides that, they know exactly that the students need the score and most of the teachers use it to make them do the assignment. There are just a few teachers who are concerned about the knowledge that is obtained by the students. In learning activities, the teachers and the students know their own characteristics. In this case, the students are more flexible than the teachers because they know that they must appreciate the elder. It’s usual for the students to meet some teachers who apply punishment for those who don’t do the assignment, and they won’t be punished for sure so that they will do the assignment. The students need education for their future and they’ll do their best so that they won’t make their parents disappointed. Because of this reason they don’t want to be left behind in the lesson, so there is no other choice besides doing the assignment that is given by the teachers.

Thirdly, if the assignment is done, the teachers can simply say that the students have understood the lesson. It is impossible if the students don’t do their assignment because they need score. So they will do anything to finish their assignment. Unfortunately, the teachers never care about it. They just know that the students do the assignment and submit it, but they don’t know whether the students have understood the lesson or not and how the students finish their assignment. The worst thing is that the teachers use it to make people think that they are such responsible teachers that they give those assignments in order to make their students independent. But the fact is different: most of the teachers give those assignments for their formality. After that they just neglect it and they never check on the assignments that have been done by the students so that they jump into conclusion that the students have understood the lesson. If the students do not understand about the lesson that was taught, it means that the teachers have responsibility to repeat the lesson in order to make the students understand the lesson well. But, they just consider it as a kind of futile activity because they need more time, more energy, and more patience to prepare the material. So, it’s better for them to assume that the students have understood the lesson so that they don’t have to repeat the lesson again.

However, assignment is an application of the lesson that was taught for the students. After explaining the lesson to the students, the teachers have to make sure whether the students have understood the lesson or not. If they don’t, the lessons that are given by them to the students mean nothing. At the same time, they also use it as a parameter for them because they will know the ability of the students through the score of the assignment. But let us see from the other side. Nowadays, there are many teachers who misuse the main function of assignment. They often use it as an excuse for them. It means that they just take the advantages of assignment for themselves. Besides that, most of the teachers never check on the assignments that have been done by the students. They only sign the assignment then give the same score for most of the students. So how can the teachers know the students’ ability if they do those things? If they act like that, the students will never know their mistakes so that they can’t fix it and will repeat it in the future. Actually, there are many other things that the teachers can do if they want to know the ability of the students. With all of these reasons, why should they give those assignments to the students if they know that the students often complain about it as one of their loads while they have many other things to do. It just makes them confused because they have too many things to do.

We can find best solutions. They should explain the right answer of the assignment to the students so that they will understand the lesson well and fix their mistakes, and then they won’t repeat it in the future. If the teachers do that, it means that they are good teachers because they do not run away from their responsibility and care about their students. Besides that, they also use assignment as a parameter for them, so they shouldn’t sign the assignment only then give the same score for most of the students because how can the teachers know that the students do their assignment by themselves if they never check on it. The ability of the students is not the same, so in order to know their ability the teachers are supposed to check on the assignment first then give a proper score to the students. Checking on the students’ assignment is the same as appreciating their hard work. But if they don’t, it will be painful for the students. This kind of action means that they don’t appreciate the students, which causes the teachers to be known as bad teachers.

In conclusion, assignment is the best excuse for teachers to avoid their responsibilities because of some reasons. The first is because the teachers can do other things that they want to while their students do their assignment. Second, they won’t be worried if some of their students do not understand about the lesson that was taught, and the last one is if the assignment is done, they can simply say that the students have understood the lesson. However, assignment is an application of the lesson that was taught. Besides that, the teachers use it as a parameter to know the ability of the students. On the other hand, most of the teachers misuse it and they only sign the assignment and give the same score for their students. So, the teachers should explain the right answer of the assignment to the students and check on the assignment first then give a proper score to the students.
