Powerful Words, Beautiful Rhymes 1


(Posting on words of wisdom and the likes; prepared for our partner school; by one NEB)

Once a partner teacher of our partner school requested us to provide them with some words of wisdom, slogans, or mottos they would put up on sign boards around their school compound, and we came up with the following as you can see and read.

We made them in such a way that they represent the major issues that our education faces and has to tackle. As such, they serve to function much like Al-Fatihah of the Muslim Qur’an, which is an opening chapter of the Holy Book which introduces but already contains all the essence of the entire Book.

Only local schools with a global perspective

survive competitions now getting so stiff

(Hanya sekolah lokal dengan perspektif global

akan memenangkan persaingan yang semakin kental)

Good local schools are certainly not bad

Internationally standardized local schools must be ahead

(Sekolah lokal yang baik tentu saja bagus

Sekolah lokal berstandar internasional mesti s’lalu di depan terus)

They say education has been reduced into teaching

We believe teaching is only a small part of education

(Orang bilang pendidikan telah direduksi menjadi hanya pengajaran

Kami percaya pengajaran hanyalah bagian kecil dari pendidikan)

School that easily transfers knowledge

should build character even more

(Sekolah yang dapat dengan mudah mentransfer ilmu

harus lebih banyak membangun karakter)

Giving what students want is only NOW fulfilling

Giving them what they need is LATER rewarding

(Memberikan apa yang siswa maui sekarang hanyalah nikmat sesaat

Memberikan apa yang mereka butuhkan ’kan nanti bawa manfaat)

Everyone teaches

Not every one really educates

(Semua orang bisa mengajar

Tidak setiap orang bisa mendidik)

A good teacher who inspires

is a figure to whom every student aspires

(Guru yang menjadi inspirasi

adalah figur yang siswa cari)

Trees, plants, and flowers are all around seen

(Kami mendukung kampanye ‘Ayo Hijau’

Pohon, tanaman, dan bunga sudah terlihat dari jau)

Not only do good teachers teach

They also practice what they preach

(Guru yang baik tak hanya bisa mengajar

Mereka juga mengerjakan apa yang mereka ajar)

Teaching is knowledge-transferring

Educating is character-building

Learning is self-changing

School is to make all these tasks challenging

(Mengajar adalah mentransfer ilmu

Mendidik adalah membangun karaktermu

Belajar adalah mengubah dirimu

Sekolah harus mampu membuat ini semua menjadi menantang bagimu)

A real school to students is like a second home

a place they would always find nice to roam

(Sekolah sejatinya bagi siswa adalah seperti rumah kedua

tempat yang selalu menarik untuk mereka s’lalu bersua)

Teaching environment to students is making them aware

of their responsibility to take care

of their natural surrounding everywhere

(Mengajar tentang lingkungan kepada siswa adalah membuat mereka punya sifat

untuk bertanggung jawab selalu merawat

lingkungan hidup alami di setiap bahkan sembarang tempat)

(Seyogyanya sekolah mengajarkan keterampilan berpikir bagi siswa)

They say thinking skills are lacking in education

We say we incorporate them into everyday teaching-learning processes

(Mereka bilang keterampilan berpikir minim dilatih dalam pendidikan

Kami yakinkan kami memasukkannya dalam setiap heseharian proses belajar-mengajar)

And so in teaching thinking we persist

We make it part of lesson learning not to resist

A good teacher doesn’t attempt to make students love him

He makes them like what he teaches

(Guru yang baik tidak bersikukuh membuat siswa mencintainya

Ia membuat siswa menyukai pelajarannya)

Learning is fun

only to the extent that jokes and laughter are around

in the middle of serious learning not turned into a pun

(Belajar seyogyanya menyenangkan

hanya sebatas canda tawa yang dapat dikeluarkan

di tengah-tengah belajar serius yang tak jadi bahan lawakan)

expressing all that he is without being a pretender

(Guru hebat adalah aktor

Rote memory is instilled in teaching

(Keterampilan hidup ditanamkan dalam pendidikan

Daya ingat sesaat dirangsang dalam pengajaran)

Skills over knowledge

Character over ego

Personality over being

(Keterampilan, bukannya pengetahuan

Karakter, bukannya keegoan

Kepribadian, bukannya keakuan)

School does not shape students into what they SHOULD become

It helps them realize what they WANT to be

(Sekolah tidak mendikte siswa HARUS jadi siapa

Sekolah membantu siswa MAU jadi apa)

A teacher is more a source of wisdom

than he is one of just knowledge

(Guru harus lebih menjadi sumber kebijaksanaan

daripada hanya sekadar corong pengetahuan)

A skilled teacher is trained

But both are born to train

(Guru hebat terlahir

Guru terampil terlatih

Tapi keduanya terlahir untuk melatih)

Educating is automatically teaching

Teaching is hardly educating

(Mendidik otomatis mengajar

Mengajar tidak selalu mendidik)

Students of character become great personalities

Those of just knowledge possess few qualities

(Siswa berkarakter akan menjadi orang besar

Siswa hanya berilmu takkan s’lalu berakhir benar)

Students of great confidence are not too many a narcissist

They are young people who constantly persist

in expressing themselves to show they exist

(Siswa pede bukan narsis

Mereka orang muda yang tahu persis

Bagaimana mengekspresikan diri agar s’lalu eksis)

Bad labels and terms are created

by those who never make it

in showing others that they are wanted

(Istilah dan label jelek sengaja dibuat

Oleh mereka yang tak pernah punya bakat

Untuk menjajal kemampuan diri dalam berbuat)

A teacher transfers

A motivator motivates

But an educator transfers, motivates, and changes simultaneously

(Guru mentransfer

Motivator memotivasi

Tapi pendidik mentransfer, memotivasi, dan mengubah sekaligus)

There’s only a fine thin line

Between being crazy and genius

In the middle of which being ordinarily normal is not an option

(Hanya ada batas tipis saja

Antara gila dan jenius

Di antara keduanya ada normal yang tak patut jadi pilihan)
